“Primarily I am a painter. Much of my painting is a combination of observation and imagination. Once engaged with a subject, I choose to improvise rather than copy what I am looking at, so the results are more about how I feel about what I am seeing than recording specific objects or scenes. Structure, color and mood are important components.
In my studio and in my home I am fortunate to be surrounded by interesting visual objects, sculptures, paintings, favorite objects etc., all of these stimulatemy imagination and are more than just props - they are things I have a relationship with, for many of the objects have a history - there is a story to tell.
Most often my paintings are in oil, gouache, acrylic, ink or pastel, however I work in many mediums and I enjoy mixing it up. Sensations, shapes, juxtaposed images, and the relationship of random objects also generates work in collage, printmaking, digital art and other mixed-media. I like to work on multiple artworks at one time. I may get things started by pushing paints or inks around with different art tools, variety of papers etc.
I enjoy experimenting with various mediums just to see what happens, often surprised by where it leads me. A cross-section of my artwork ranges from very straightforward to very experimental, colorful, sometimes graphic.”
